This 3-week, 30-hour intensive course represents a new and innovative approach to English learning. It helps you to improve your active communication skills through real practice with the IELTS test in mind. While the major focus is on speaking, you will also develop useful and effective strategies for listening, reading and writing. It is ‘learning by doing’ with the teacher’s guidance.
This course develops your ability to comprehend a wide range of typical IELTS questions (listening or reading. You also learn how to communicate fluently and accurately (whether speaking or writing) with much greater confidence and flexibility. Every question (whether ‘easy’ or ‘difficult’, ‘new’ or ‘familiar’) requires good understanding and similar skilful, confident, connected and extensive answers.
In fact, you will learn that there are no ‘correct answers’, only skilful, structured, connected, logical ones, with appropriate grammatical accuracy and natural pronunciation. For example, students discover the importance of expressing their opinions, giving reasons and examples as ways to give their answers a sense of direction. Indeed, practice in this class includes:
● Understanding and answering ‘closed’ yes/ no or choice questions
● Asking questions to ask for, clarify or confirm meaning
● Developing the usage of effective and natural body language and facial gestures
● Using ‘connected sentences’ with linking words
● Describing strategies, in particular using typical adjectives and adverbs
● Giving examples, expressing results, presenting reasons,
● Expressing opinions, likes, dislikes, preferences, wants, needs or intentions
● Comparing and contrasting, e.g., expressing advantages and disadvantages
● Understanding and answering ‘open’ questions, e.g., ‘when?’, ‘how?’, ‘why?’
● Agreeing or disagreeing and saying whether something is true/ not true
● Speculating about the future, and imagining ‘real’ and ‘unreal’ possibilities
●Suggesting, advising and recommending
● Summarizing and paraphrasing
●Listening for and understanding the ‘connected’/ ‘weak’ pronunciation and natural intonation of native speakers
● Improving your own pronunciation and intonation
● Debating to encourage effective listening and to practice giving skilful responses
●Strategies for understanding, preparing and giving effective Part 2 answers in only one minute
● Confidence building techniques
●The importance of avoiding memorized answers or ones based on translation.
●The importance of giving forward-looking, flexible answers
● Collecting and learning vocabulary and useful language structures in context, and not through translation.
●‘Brainstorming’ of vocabulary and ideas to assist fluent, imaginative, creative, meaningful communication.
Besides, you actually practice speaking in a relaxed environment! A wide range of typical and recent IELTS topics (speaking and writing) are discussed, but in a flexible way. You will discover that logical, fluent and confident answers are possible to any topic or question, even ‘new’ ones, because the underlying question forms and basic requirements of the test never change.
With the teacher’s help, students who complete this course not only improve their confidence and communication abilities, but also as a result generally achieve their best possible IELTS score. Previous experience has shown that the majority of students who actively complete this course get their highest score in speaking, indeed even higher than in the other parts of the IELTS test.
