 Personal Statement

The Global Village would not come about even if all humans shared a common language. It will come true when capital and goods can move freely across borders. For that to happen, a predictable and more transparent management system for sectors open to foreign investment will be a must for China to take advantage of WTO accession, which has resulted in further improvement in its investment environment. As I offer myself as a candidate for your postgraduate courses of ******. I bring to the table years of professional experience, which includes steady and continuous promotions, all-around education with the major of Labor Economics, well-developed interpersonal relation building skills, coordination and organizational skills and firmly-held belief that I can achieve whatever I put my mind to. Throughout my adult life, I never lost my path and I hope that you will allow me to continue this path at ****** University.

My academic experience as an undergraduate was immensely enriching and I received wonderful education of systematic theories and fundamental skills in the university. My total devotion and industriousness landed me at the top of my class and helped me maintain an average grade of 83.7 on a scale of 100 percent of all the main courses completed such as Contemporary Labor Economics, Modern Salary Administration, Social Insurance and Fundamentals of Law etc. One of my most significant achievements during my undergraduate life was my overwhelmingly successful Graduation Dissertation, namely, “Studies on Labor Distribution and Its Applications in Enterprises”, completed in Beijing Capital International Airport. With the continuous growth of quantity of international airlines to Beijing and the density of international flights, Terminal Two of the airport was built up in 1999, requiring great adjustments on positions, personnel distribution and flight schedules. In collaboration with one of my classmates, I performed the field practicing in security checking division of Terminal One from March to May the same year, in charge of designing position and labor distribution. On basis of the facilities equipped with the new Terminal and forecasting passenger volume, a well-defined, high-end report on job description and position identification had been achieved due to our high commitment and strenuous efforts. With the directions from my teacher and repeated discussions with the supervisor from the airport, my dissertation was finalized and received a merit award and, to my pride, the proposals on job description and position designing we initiated in the paper are being undertaken smoothly currently.

Apart from the formal learning that took place in the university, I as well jumped at any opportunity that came my way to participate in internships and involve with part-time jobs. My strategy in attaining success is to identify my goal, figure out the best way to attain it, and then do it. During the four-year period, I have conducted internships or part-time work experiences in a wide variety of companies like China National Import and Export (Group) Corporation (CNPIEC), China Business Herald, Beijing Municipal Telecommunication Bureau and Institute of Computer Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) etc. Such field practicing involvement without a doubt allowed me to learn in a creative, exploring fashion, and provided with me the opportunity of applying what I learnt academically into practical concerns. This go-get-it attitude also served me well in my career at Beijing Mobile Communications Company, a subsidiary of the world largest operator of mobile communications industry, China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC).

Looking back, I am proud of the many professional successes I've enjoyed: the job description and duties identification I developed were used by all divisions and positions of the Networking Service Department; key clients who were going to leave CMCC decided to stay because of the efforts I made to provide them with the best services and solutions; novel and effective work I have done with respect to streamlining and upgrading the administrative system and recruitment of senior executives proved to be a great aid, getting the company prepared to list in stock market; I successful assisted in wining purchasing contracts with some big names such as MOTOROLA, NOKIA and HUAWEI and so on owing to my knowledge of Economic Law (minor in the university); the company created the position of director of Planning & Liaison Center specifically for me, where my responsibilities include overseeing the pace of civil engineering, quality control and budget supervising, because of my mastery of both economic law and HR management aspects of the job. My efforts were both recognized and appreciated, and I was rapidly promoted because I consistently went above and beyond the traditional responsibilities and expectations of my job. But the most important aspect of my job at BMCC is the research and training that I did and the knowledge and know-how I obtained. The vast majority of my time was spent reading and referring communications and civil engineering documents and then presenting this information to my job covering engineering construction, pace control and investment implementation etc.

Even though I am quite busy with my work, I deem continuous training a necessity in my spare time. I enrolled into the postgraduate class of HR Management launched by Labor Economics Department, Capital University of Economics and International Business. I have been preparing myself by taking intermediate and higher-level courses about Project Management presided by Mr. Tan from a famous management & consulting company. And I am the holder of certificate for wireless system and switching system authorized by MOTOROLA and NOKIA. In terms of English proficiency, I scored 620 of TOEFL in 1999 and am a certified interpreter with sound English proficiency in both verbal and written communications.

When I entered Project Center of BMCC, starting out in business and contracting area, the areas of my day-to-day work that I most enjoyed were researching and analyzing regulations and law so that I could effectively apply the information to the business opportunity at hand. Consequently, I realized that the most prudent path to accomplishing this would be to further my education in the advanced studies of ******. I am also interested in ****** since my major is correlated with HR Management and I have been preparing myself by accumulating abundant cases experience and taking diversified management training courses. I am confident that pursuing a MSC and later entering a career in foreign law affairs or engineering construction is the right step for me. The system education and training provided by your school is forward thinking and innovative and your educational standards are virtually unrivalled. I definitely believe I will receive a complete and rounded education and obtain a rich, fulfilling lifestyle experience in your school. I sincerely hope I can have your favorable consideration and honor to join you. Sincerely yours, GAO, ******

Personal Statement

When Streaming Fire, my refinedly bound and printed magazine was finally changed into an influential school publication and even a recommended magazine for high school students in my province, I thought I would very likely end up as a freelance writer or a chief editor. As a student leader at high school, I showed more aptitude in work of liberal art: getting my essays published in our city newspapers and winning some honors for my calligraphy. However, juvenile expectancy for a career in literature was ever beyond the fast-changing fancy for knowing something new.

I later chose accounting as my major at university and was admitted to the Accounting School of Beijing Technology and Business University. The Accounting School, which boasts notable strength in academic teaching and research, ranks 4th in all China’s universities in the field of accounting. It is still hard now to identify my initiative motive for the choice of this major. Maybe it is just a juvenile peacockery, but I’d rather deem it as an endeavor to make up what I lacked at the early stage of my life: reasons, consecution and scientific attitude instead of too much passion and sentiments.

It is fair to say that my transformation was successful, at least judged from my current accomplishment at BTBU. My average academic grade is 84 on a scale of 100 percent and won twice the school’s fellowship, which is only offered to the top 5 percent students. To be frank, I’d never imaged myself, a once poetic and sentimental teenage girl could finally fall in love with accounting, which was considered by a lot of people as a dull and trivial subject. I suppose I am nothing more special than other people. It is just the inbred strong will for getting to the first place that has pushed me along the way to delving into accounting. And it is gradually clear for me that accounting was not just a matter of calculating numbers, it is more a science very much related to every individual, small single business entities, and operation of complex corporations. Behind all the firms currently operated in the world, it is the science of finance and accounting that keeps them running well. So the subject is like veins of a creature, which bolster and provide for the development of the whole.

When I finally come out with this idea, my study of accounting was changed into a voluntary and active process combined with interests instead of the simple struggle for making up what I lacked in my character. Indeed, as I go deeper into it, I derived more interest from the subject. Case study in economic activities especially drew my great attention and kindled my curiosity. As a result, I spent quite a lot of time in reading academic journals, referring to Internet resources and than was even motivated to doing financial analysis myself. My dissertation on capital structure, which was completed under the direction of a prestigious professor of the school, engrossed both my keen interest in the topic and my tremendous effort in making researches. I almost exhausted all the sources possible including English publications, convincing facts in the Internet and relevant regulations of commercial and taxation law. It took me further several months to discuss it with my instructor and to make modifications. At the end of that semester, I presented my paper in front of the whole class and gave the longest and most elaborated speech for the voluminous and richness of the content. Later, I substantiated and refined my paper and the final outcome is an award-winning disquisition entitled The Optimization of Enterprise Capital Structure. The disquisition was sent to the school’s Competition of Dissertation attended by both teachers and students. My paper was awarded the third prize of the students’ team and received approval from the evaluation committee that was composed of professors from China’s most renowned universities. I was the only winner among sophomore students. This competition further promoted my enthusiasm in studying accounting and I realized the study of the subject involves valuable in-depth research as well as absorption and grasp of theoretic knowledge. Later I was sent as one of the four representatives of our school to attend an inter-college seminar. We did quite a lot of academic discussion and analysis of world striking Enron scandal and specially focused on debt structure of the company. My speech on the subject attracted and impressed a lot of attendees.

At the beginning of this year, I went to my internship practice at the Accounting Department of Shanxi Power Transmission Project Corporation. It was a time when I finally got to the down-to-earth work in accounting. I worked as a cashier there and was dealing with receipt voucher and payment voucher everyday. I also worked on cash receipt and payment journals, bank deposit of the company and income taxation report. I’d say this is a very crucial period for me as the pure theories I acquired at school finally hard landed in realistic work. My internship work was indeed simple and basic. But it was also overloaded with details. It influenced the overall flow of the financial work. The general ledger and other financial statements were based on the original certificates I made as a cashier. I’ve tried my best to be careful, hardworking and highly responsible. Three months later when my internship ended, I was the most effective staff in my department and most important of all, I felt my previous study at school was validated and strengthened. It is worth to mention my skills in computer accounting, which had helped a lot in improving work efficiency of the whole department.

Despite all my endeavors in studying my major, I found myself still enamored with the joys derived from helping and communicating with others. I became the president of English Association of my school and later helped develop it into the most influential community with over 300 members in the school. I sought cooperations with a broadcasting station, some popular local newspapers and a publishing company and organized a series of such significant activities as English Corner, Free Access to English Films and Comprehensive English Skills Competition for the students. My experience as a community leader taught me the skills to communicate and organize, the ability to understand differences and the persistence required in the struggle for success.

Again making evaluation of my past, I feel much contented with what I’ve been engaged in. I remember Frost once sighed for the differences one made upon choosing diverged roads. But I’d rather say that every road one takes may unfold the same amazing scenes as long as he knows to appreciate life. I’ve seen my future career posed in the fields of accounting and finance. While I have no doubt your post graduate program will push me to my limits, I am confident that I can face the rigorous challenges of it and thrive on the road I’ve decided to take.

Recommendation Letter

April 9th, 2003

Dear Sir or Madam:

It gives me a great honor to recommend Miss Yan Li, one of the most enthusiastic and talented students I’ve ever taught to study in your esteemed graduate school.

Miss Li has managed to set herself apart from her peers in the Accounting School of our university, which is one of China’s most acclaimed schools in this area. We send the nation’s best and brightest students to British graduate programs, and it is my pleasure to recommend her as another example of this excellence.

Miss Li took the courses of “Enterprise Finance” and “Analysis of Financial Statement” which I delivered separately in her junior and senior school year. In both of the courses, she got good marks in the exams and ranked among the top 10 percent of the whole class. Through my instruction, I found that she is an inquisitive and attentive person. She always concentrated on my lectures and was earnest to acquire any knowledge that concerned her major. My courses emphasize practical skills with a lot of in-class discussions and a heavy load of homework in the form of case studies. Miss Li greatly impressed me as a most active member in class discussions, an effective coordinator in group work and conveyor of students` opinions. I pretty appreciated her maturity and creativity in academic study as an undergraduate student. Although some of the assignments in my courses were somewhat convoluted to the average students, Li could always deal with them precisely and faultlessly owing to her logical and analytical thinking and the right comprehension of the theories.

Miss Li also has a strong ability of communication and the potential as a researcher in this field. I remembered once I arranged an academic thesis for students studying my course of “Enterprise Finance” and asked them to give a brief speech at the last class of the semester. In order to accomplish the assignment well, Miss Li read a great amount of highly specialized books on capital structure including some English publications since she is good at English. She came to discuss the subject with me during that time frequently and came out with plenty of new and original ideas. Through my contact with her, I found she was really interested in accounting and management and had an unusual flair to study them well. Later in the class, with great self-confidence, she gave an accurate and splendid illustration within around 20 minutes on that subject, which distinguished her from all the other students. After revising her paper entitled “Optimization of Enterprise Capital Structure”, I recommended the article to the committee of “Teachers & Students’ Dissertation Competition” held annually in our school. Her creative view on the theory was approved and appreciated by most of the professors both from our school and Renmin University of China. She got the Third Prize in the activity. And the thesis was published in the learned journal of “Future Accountants” of our school.

I am pleased when Li told me she would like to pursue advanced studies in your university, since I am sure that your renowned programs will help stand her in good stead in her future career. Upon my observation, Miss Li has been fully prepared to undertake graduate study in the accounting fields. I am confident that with the ingenious learning ability and diligent attitude that she has shown, she will be able to perform outstandingly even in a highly demanding program. I strongly recommend this promising young lady and your favorable consideration and assistance to her will be very much appreciated.

Yours sincerely *********
